Jargon Buster

What is an algorithm?

Broadly speaking, an algorithm is a procedure or formula for solving a problem. Within the confines of search engine marketing, however, the term is used to refer to the specific algorithms used by search engines to rank the pages they find as they crawl the web.

The most famous of all search engine algorithms is undoubtedly Google's PageRank system, developed by founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page.
