Portuguese is the national language of both Portugal and Brazil giving it a strong foothold in both western continents. It is closely related - but very different - to Spanish having added many arabic words from Portugal's long history. Portuguese and Brazilians converse quite easily with each other - but there are subtle differents in accents and word structures.
