The Ukrainian language: an introduction


Ukrainian is the national language of the Ukraine - but many people in the Ukraine speak Russian and prefer speaking Russian - thanks to the influence of Russia during the lifetime of the Soviet Union. It is a slavic language - like Russian - and has vocabularly influences particularly from Russian and Polish.

How many speakers are there of the Ukrainian language?


There are 35 million speakers of Ukrainian - so it's not a small language! There are also Ukrainian communities in many other countries.

Ukrainian faces many of the issues of Russian - including the inflection of the words. It uses the Cyrillic alphabet - but has three additional characters to Russian.
